EBAN Legal USA represents the developing U.S. dimension of a professional practice established in Spain.
Our objective is not to reproduce a Spanish legal practice in the United States, nor to compete with attorneys and professional structures already established there. We are developing a different model: a practical framework through which clients, lawyers and other professionals on either side of the Atlantic can reach the appropriate expertise on the other.
This development is gradual. We distinguish between what exists today, what is being developed and what remains a future professional objective.
Across Different Legal Systems
Cross-border legal matters frequently begin before a client knows which professional, jurisdiction or legal specialty will ultimately be required.
The United States and continental Europe operate within different legal traditions, institutional structures and professional cultures. Legal concepts do not always have direct equivalents, professional roles are organized differently, and the way a legal problem is identified, presented and ultimately handled may vary considerably from one jurisdiction to another.
For an international client, this can make access to the appropriate professional unexpectedly difficult.
The challenge is not simply finding a lawyer who speaks the client’s language. It may involve understanding what kind of lawyer is required, which jurisdiction is relevant, how the professional relationship is structured and how a problem formulated within one legal culture should be presented within another.
The same difficulty can arise in the opposite direction when a U.S. client or professional encounters a matter involving Spain or the European Union.
Beyond the Language Barrier
Language matters, but translation alone does not remove the distance between legal systems.
The Spanish language creates a natural connection between Spain and much of Latin America, while English remains the principal professional language of the U.S. legal environment. This provides an important foundation for cross-border communication, but communication is only the beginning.
A prospective international client may speak English and still find the U.S. legal environment unfamiliar. Finding an attorney online may be relatively easy; understanding which attorney is appropriate, how U.S. legal specialties and jurisdictions operate, what information should be provided and what to expect from the professional relationship can be considerably more difficult.
Conversely, a U.S. attorney or client may communicate easily with a Spanish professional while still requiring assistance in understanding Spanish institutions, legal concepts, procedures and professional practice.
We therefore understand cross-border accessibility as a combination of language, legal systems, institutional understanding and professional culture.
The objective is not to replace local expertise. It is to make local expertise easier to reach across languages, legal systems and professional cultures.
A Two-Way Bridge
Our approach is deliberately reciprocal.
When a client approaching the United States from Spain, Europe or Latin America requires advice or representation concerning U.S. law, our objective is not to substitute the attorneys qualified to provide it. It is to help connect that client with an appropriately licensed U.S. professional and, where useful and professionally appropriate, facilitate the cross-border relationship.
In this sense, EBAN Legal USA is intended to help bring international clients into the U.S. professional ecosystem rather than compete with the professionals already practising within it.
The same principle operates in the opposite direction.
U.S. attorneys, businesses and individuals may encounter matters involving Spain or, where appropriate, the European Union. EBAN’s professional base in Spain provides the European side of that relationship and creates opportunities for collaboration with U.S. professionals whose clients require Spanish or European legal expertise.
Local expertise remains local. Our role is to make the connection between jurisdictions more intelligible, accessible and practical.
Why Seattle
Seattle, Washington, has been selected deliberately as the U.S. reference point for the development of EBAN Legal USA.
EBAN Legal LLC maintains a commercial mailing address in Seattle for correspondence. This address does not constitute a staffed or client-facing office.
Washington also forms part of the long-term professional development of EBAN Legal USA. The Managing Partner intends to pursue qualification as a Foreign Law Consultant under Washington Supreme Court Admission and Practice Rule 14 (APR 14), subject to the applicable requirements and admission process.
If obtained, this limited license would form part of EBAN’s broader objective of developing its capacity to advise on Spanish law from Washington, within the professional scope permitted by APR 14.
This remains a future professional objective. No application has yet been submitted, and obtaining the qualification is not a prerequisite for the development of EBAN Legal USA or its projects.
A Foreign Law Consultant license would not constitute general admission to practise U.S. law. Matters requiring legal advice or representation under U.S. law will be handled by or referred to appropriately licensed U.S. attorneys.
Working With Local Professionals
We believe that cross-border legal work is stronger when local expertise is respected rather than replicated from a distance.
EBAN Legal USA therefore intends progressively to develop relationships with independent U.S.-licensed attorneys and other qualified professionals whose expertise may be relevant to international clients approaching the United States.
Our purpose is not to build an artificial substitute for established U.S. practices. It is to help international matters reach the professionals best placed to handle them within the relevant jurisdiction.
We are equally interested in developing relationships with U.S. professionals whose clients encounter legal matters in Spain or require coordination involving Spanish or, where appropriate, European Union law.
The purpose is not to create the appearance of a single practice operating everywhere. It is to develop reliable professional connections between independent practitioners and structures operating within their respective jurisdictions.
Any future collaboration will be structured according to the professional and regulatory requirements applicable to the professionals, services and jurisdictions involved.
Projects as Development
We do not believe that an unfinished initiative should be presented as an established service.
Projects developed within EBAN Legal USA may begin with research, progress through testing and professional review, and evolve into operational services only when their practical usefulness, professional framework and required standards have been sufficiently established.
Technology and artificial intelligence may form part of that process where they provide a meaningful professional or informational function. Their use does not remove the need for authoritative sources, professional judgment or appropriately licensed counsel where individualized legal advice is required.
Not every experiment will produce a satisfactory result. Some approaches may require revision, further testing or abandonment.
Where useful, selected milestones, testing results and changes in methodology may be documented through our Updates. This may include results that demonstrate that a particular approach is not yet sufficiently reliable or requires further development.
For us, transparency applies not only to what a project eventually becomes, but also to how it is developed.
Current Project
USResidence
USResidence is the first project being developed within this framework.
The project explores how authoritative U.S. legal and governmental information, carefully structured technology and collaboration with U.S.-licensed attorneys may help international users better understand lawful pathways for establishing themselves in the United States.
Its principal perspective begins outside the United States: with individuals who are considering a lawful move to the U.S. and need to understand an unfamiliar legal and professional environment before deciding how to proceed.
It may also address the needs of individuals already lawfully present in the United States who are considering legitimate options concerning their continued residence or qualifying family members.
USResidence is being developed around official U.S. sources and a clear distinction between general legal information, preliminary orientation and individualized legal advice requiring an appropriately qualified professional.
The project is currently under development. Its methodology, testing and future professional network will evolve progressively and, where appropriate, material developments will be documented through Updates.
A Developing U.S. Presence
EBAN Legal USA is being developed progressively from an established professional base in Spain.
Its present structure should not be confused with the structure it may eventually become. The existence of EBAN Legal LLC, a U.S. mailing address, project domains or development initiatives does not imply that every contemplated professional service or physical presence is currently available.
As professional relationships, projects and capabilities develop, we intend to describe those developments as they actually occur.
What exists will be identified as existing. What is being developed will be described as being developed. Future objectives will remain future objectives until they become something more.
